The History of Junior Varsity
Wonder Football
1952-2020
"We Now Have a Purpose"
For over five decades, Junior Varsity Football has been a standing tradition in Kannapolis, and has entertained Wonder fans every Thursday night from late August to early November as a pre cursor to Friday night Varsity gridiron action. A.L. Brown High School first began fielding a dedicated junior varsity football team in 1952 when A.L. Brown High School first came into existence. Oddly enough, A.L. Brown's first junior varsity players remained at J.W. Cannon that first season after the school was re assigned as a junior high level institution for eigth and ninth grade students. A.L. Brown's first ever head jayvee coach was Bob Cooke, Cooke would coach the jayvees to a 3-3 season in 1952 before turning it over to Bill Lippard in 1953. Lippard's charges would finish the 1953 season at 4-3. The following season in 1954 Bo Bell took over the program and guided the Baby Wonders to a 5-1 finish. Vic Caldwell would take over responsibility of the jayvees in 1955 and would remain at that post until 1957.
The Jayvee Little Wonders played for six straight years from 1952-1957, then in 1958, participation for football dropped significantly, which prompted then head coach Ed Edmiston to re evaluate the program, subsequently suspending the Jayvee program at A.L. Brown in order to keep depth numbers at an acceptable level for varsity. After a six year lull, in 1964 Jayvee football was reinstated under first year head coach Roy Boyles. Both Boyles and his assistant coach Bob Mauldin agreed that fielding a Jayvee squad made perfect sense, as long as Varsity participation stayed at an acceptable level. Extra gate revenue alone justified jayvee football here, as it would help subsidize other athletic programs, while in the process help in developing raw talent that was not yet varsity ready after completion of junior high school.
Jayvee football got off to a rousing start during the first four years from 1964-1967, with Little Wonder teams going a combined 25-3-2 during that stretch. A good portion of that success laid at the feet of Roy Boyles, Bob Mauldin and a former defensive standout from South Rowan Frankie Wright who were charged with mentoring the young program, but all good things must come to an end, and soon jubilation would give way to despair. In the five years that followed after 1967, Wonder teams fell off noticeably, recording their only three losing seasons in their collective history in 1968, 1970, and 1971. This was a period when many agree that the program began losing it's direction and purpose. Wonder junior varsity teams transitioned through some five different coaches during this period. Later acquisitions such as, Jake Suggs, Jerry Ellenburg, Arden Ray and Roger Richardson would make an attempt at finding some continuity within the program, but to little avail.
Then in 1973, a young assistant coach from Lenoir Ryhne College (Gerald Hefner) was hired to then head coach Will Campagna's staff to oversee the eighth grade team at J.W. Cannon. For two seasons Hefner held down this assignment. When coach Campagna resigned his position for employment in the Mecklenburg County school system after the 1973 grid season, Hefner was then asked to transition to the jayvee assignment at A.L. Brown. The program now under the control of new head coach and former assistant Lope Linder had just finished up a 6-3-1 campaign in 1973, and were trying to climb their way back into relevance. Coach Linder would resign his position after the 1975 season, and the architect of Kannapolis football as we know it Bob Boswell would be hired to take Kannapolis football to that next level.
With the arrival of coach Robert "Bob" Boswell in 1976, philosophies changed, and the now twelve year old junior varsity program would take on a much different and better defined role than it had in the years preceeding it, we now have a purpose. Coach Boswell's task was to first and foremost build a program that succeeded on Friday nights, but in order to accomplish that, he knew that without a solid junior varsity program behind him the varsity could not excel on a consistent basis, and coach Boswell was looking for a long term solution rather than a short term fix. The junior varsity program would become the primary link in a network chain that would become a very intricate feeder program within the Kannapolis City Schools that involved all the area elementary schools at that time. Coach Hefner would be entrusted with this facet of the program's success for many years to come. Both varsity and junior varsity athletes would now practice together as one unit rather than separate factions. This philosophy allowed both programs to operate off the same sheet of music rather than working independently, producing results that worked in unison for the common good of the program as a whole.
Coach Hefner would not be without help in this endeavor. Early on coach Hefner would be given assistance from top tier coaching assistants like Chip Sigmon, David Moody, and Ron Byerly who through the eighties and early nineties brought the junior varsity program to staggering heights. Jayvee football in Kannapolis was no longer an afterthought. Fans in K-Town who attended a junior varsity football contest on Thursday nights were assured of being entertained with football comparable to the caliber of football they would come to expect on Friday nights, and the Wonder jayvees didn't disappoint.
Former coaches and players alike credit coach Hefner in playing a pivotal role in the success of the Wonder jayvee football program from the time he was assigned the task in 1975, until he relinquished his spot on the staff in 1996. Several of coach Hefner's linebacker standouts would go on to play key positions in head coach Bruce Hardin's 3A State Championship team the following year in 1997. One former coach went so far as to say "Coach Hefner's role in the success of the Kannapolis jayvee football program can not be overstated" Coach Hefner downplays that analogy as one would expect, sharing that success story with many other participants who shared in the responsibility with him, and who took that responsibility very seriously. Personally I trust those who shared that insight with me, and have little doubt that they are the most qualified to give that credit. Either way, one only has to look at the record and you will see that the proof is in the pudding.
The Kannapolis JV football program is now in it's fifty seventh year entering the new decade of the 2020's, and over the last fifty six seasons, the JV program has excelled far beyond it's initial expectations that coach Boyles and coach Mauldin could have imagined back in 1964. As a result, Kannapolis Jayvee football has captured forty nine winning seasons, with only three losing seasons to speak of. The Wonder Jayvees have gone undefeated fourteen times since 1964, and have steamrolled through thirty two seasons having won eight or more games in a campaign, and four seasons finishing at 500%. Since 1978, the Kannapolis Jayvees have won 31 confirmed conference Championships. (29) of those are outright Championships. (7) Division 7 CPC 4A Conference Championships, (20) South Piedmont 3A Conference Championships, (2) North Piedmont 3A Conference Championships, and (2) South Piedmont 3A Conference Co-Championships. For a streak of eleven consecutive seasons from 1978-1988, the Kannapolis Jayvees have held either an outright or shared conference championship in all of those eleven seasons.
The Wonder Jayvees recorded a win streak of 23 consecutive games from 1990 till the 5th game of the 1992 season before falling 28-18 to West Rowan, the longest recorded win streak in the Jayvee program's history. The second longest was a streak of nineteen games from 1997 till the tenth game of the 1998 season when they fell to Concord in the season finale. Overall, Wonder Jayvees have played five hundred and thirty contests, and are a combined 420-97-14 in their collective history, giving them an overall winning percentage of 81.2%. Over those five hundred and thirty contests, the Wonder Jayvees have outscored their opponents by a combined total of 13,556-5,009. The Wonder jayvees have not experienced a losing season since 1971, 48 years not falling below 500%, The season of 2020 was suspended because of the Covid outbreak, and resumed in the fall season of 2021. The Wonder JVs fell on hard times and recorded back to back losing seasons in 2021 and 2022. -The editor

Against Their Big 3 Crosstown Rivals"
Concord Spiders
The record almost rivals that of a Kannapolis/South Rowan or Kannapolis/Northwest Cabarrus varsity rivalry history, and you would be hard pressed to find a more dominant display of football mastery than that what the Wonder Jayvees hold over our biggest crosstown rival Concord. The annual rivalry game between the varsity Little Wonders and Spiders had been raging for 20 consecutive years prior to that first ever scheduled contest between the Wonder and Spider jayvees in 1950.
The very first Kannapolis/Concord Jayvee game took place on Tuesday, October 10th, 1950 at Midway Ball Park in Kannapolis, with the Spiders taking a 19-0 win over the Little Wonder eleven. This was two years prior to the opening of A.L. Brown High in 1952. The two schools would not play again until 1954 in which the Wonders scored their first victory 7-6 at Webb Field in Concord. That year the two rival schools would play twice in the same season with the Wonders taking victories in both contests. The Little Wonders and Spiders would meet only three times in the decade of the fifties, as scheduling was very sporadic during this time. Kannapolis would suspend jayvee football from 1958-1963. The Little Wonders jayvees would begin a full South Piedmont Conference football schedule the, and like the varsity, the annual meeting between the two teams would become the season finale.
Since that first contest in 1950, a total of sixty three junior varsity football contests have been played between the rival institutions of Kannapolis and Concord, with the Wonders holding a very commanding 51-8-4 overall series record. Of those sixty three contests, Kannapolis football has outscored the Spiders by a combined total of 1,460-457, with sixteen of those Spider losses coming by way of shutout. Currently, Kannapolis football holds a twenty one consecutive game win streak against the Black and Gold, with the Spiders last victory coming in 1998.

South Rowan Raiders
The A.L. Brown Wonders and South Rowan Raider Jayvees began their rivalry when the JV program was reinstated in 1964, and like the Concord Spiders pretty much remained a mainstay on the Wonders schedule with the exception of a few year lapses in 1970 and 1972. Since 1964 the two programs have competed on the gridiron fifty times, with the Green and White holding yet another very commanding lead by a total of 42-8-1 overall.
Of those forty victories, the Wonders have beaten their counterpart by a combined total of 1,730-429, with eleven of those wins coming by way of shutout. The majority of the Raiders victories came during a four year stretch from 1973-1976 in the leaner years of the program. The decade of the eighties saw the Green and White register nine consecutive victories over the Raiders before the Raiders could get their first win in 1989. The nineties wouldn't fare any better for the Raiders, as the Wonders took a clean sweep over the Southerners that decade, going a perfect 10-0.
Like the Varsity, the Wonder and Raider Jayvees would call a halt to their annual crosstown meeting in 2017, with the Raiders citing a lack of competitiveness in the contest to remain a viable and productive contest for their program, and even though the reasoning behind the halt was understandable, it was sad to see the long standing rivalry game come to an end. A.L. Brown and South Rowan would resume play in 2023.

Northwest Cabarrus Trojans
The Wonder and Trojan Jayvees began battling on the gridiron in 1966, when Northwest Cabarrus first opened it's doors for business. Since 1966, the Wonder and Trojan Jayvees have battled forty one times, with the Wonders holding yet another commanding lead over their arch nemesis by an overall 39-1-1. In those forty one victories, the Wonders have defeated the Trojans by a combined total of 1,352-256, with eighteen of those victories coming by way of shutout.
One of the most dominant decades for the Green and White came in the decade of the eighties when the Wonders made a clean sweep of the Orange and Black, holding the Trojans to just a scant eighteen points for the entire decade. The Trojan Jayvee's lone victory came in a 21-12 affair in 2003. The recent success of the Trojan varsity football program has not translated to the junior varsity, as in both of those winning Trojan years, their Jayvees continued to lose to K-Town.

"The Teams"
2020-1964
Wonder fans, In this segment of the definitive history of Kannapolis Jayvee Football, you will see a year by year synopsis of each individual Wonder jayvee team begiining with 2019 and ending with the first jayvee team of 1964. Each decade begins with a special slideshow filled with photos from the era. Each synopsis is complete with team photo and roster. Unfortunately, some years before 1989 rosters were unavailable. Those years are specified in each column. Jayvee years 1964 and 1983 are the only years that a photo of the team was unavailable. I exhausted every resource I could find including archival newspaper articles, microfilm and yearbooks to no avail.
Scheduling of jayvee games early in the program's history was an adventure. In the first two to three seasons, teams would often be scheduled twice in a season, because many schools at that time did not field dedicated jayvee teams. Concord, Davie County, Albemarle, South Rowan, and Thomasville were among the programs the Little Wonders would schedule twice in a season from 1964-1966. From 1966-1970 contests would get canceled at the last minute, leaving a void in the schedule that was either filled at the last minute or cancelled entirely. That is why you will find a fluctuation in early season schedules of seven, eight and nine games up till about 1974. The ultimate goal was to establish a consistent ten game season like the varsity, but often times it was just not feasible and the teams would just have to settle for what they could get. In the later decades that followed the seventies, a game would get cancelled here and there, but it was never an ongoing problem. Most of the decades after the seventies you will find ten game seasons were consistent throughout.
Score histories are as close to 100% complete as I could get. Through my extensive research I double, and triple checked all my available resources so that no games were missed. The score history you will see has been confirmed through three different resources for accuracy, and I am pleased to say that out of five hundred and twenty seven jayvee football contests played, only one score is unaccounted for from fifty six junior varsity seasons. I was unable to locate the final score from the Davie County contest in 1988.
I have included archival newspaper clippings when possible to highlight certain historical facts that are pertinent to each individual season, and to help corroborate my research. Clippings can be clicked on and expanded for easier viewing. I am 99.999% confident that the historical content you are about to view is as accurate and concise as you will find. With that said, enjoy your visit through fifty six years of A.L. Brown Wonder Jayvee football. -The editor
