"The 1977 A.L. Brown Wonders"
"Trial by Fire"
In 1977 second year coach Bob Boswell would take his charges into the Central Piedmont AAAA Conference where they would face seven new foes for the 1977 grid season. Among those oponents would be Winston Salem Reynolds, Winston Salem Parkland, High Point Andrews, Greensboro Dudley, Greensboro Grimsley, West Forsyth, and Lucy Ragsdale. The schedule was enough to make the average football team wish they could stay home and watch reruns of Good Times instead of playing football, but the Wonders geared up and made the best with what was available at the time. The Wonders first documented victory in the AAAA conference would come in week six of the regular season against the Titans of West Forsyth. A monumental victory for the Wonders giving them the confidence they needed to finish the rest of the season, but confidence and actions are two different things entirely. Unfortunately for the Wonders it would be the last taste of victory for the 1977 season. Week after week the Wonders found themselves outgunned and outmanned as each new oponent chalked up victory at the Wonder's expense.
The new AAAA conference was being anything but kind to the Wonders who fought with pride game after game and never gave up. The 1977 Wonders were still a very young group still transitioning from old ways and depth issues. Supporters of Wonder football began to wonder if the transition into the AAAA would be more than they could handle, but the master strategist Bob Boswell knew it would only be a matter of time before the Wonders would be able to compete with anybody. If Wonder nation would have been blessed with a crystal ball they would have never believed what would come as a result of these tough beginnings, but thats the excitement of high school football.
This is the story of the 1977 Wonders first run in AAAA conference. A tough year indeed for the guys in green who wanted nothing more than to win every game for their school and for their town. These Wonders had the dubious distinction of being the sacrificial lambs for the school's first outing in the new conference and victory was a premium whenever it could be found. The Wonders gave everything they had to be successful, but no ammount of desire or drive would keep these Wonders from experiencing those dreaded AAAA blues that seemed almost destined to happen.
